In today’s world, it is essential for everyone to be able to communicate from a distance. If you cannot afford a phone, there are options for you. The United States government provides free cell phones and phone usage plans to certain individuals.
If you do not make a lot of money or receive some form of government assistance you may qualify for Lifeline Assistance, a program that gives people access to free cell phones and inexpensive or even free phone minutes and data usage.
You probably know about common government assistance programs like Medicaid and SNAP but did you know that if you are enrolled in these programs then you probably also qualify for a free government cell phone?
The Lifeline Assistance program provides free phones and cheap or free usage plans to Americans who already receive certain benefits from the government or have an income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines.
Do not miss out on a free cell phone. If you are enrolled in one of the below programs then you probably qualify for Lifeline Assistance.
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as Food Stamps
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)
- Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit
- Tribal Programs (and live on federally-recognized Tribal lands)
If you participate in one of these programs then it is easy to find out if you qualify for a free phone from the government. All you have to do is show proof that you are enrolled in government assistance by providing a card, letter, or official document on your application on the Lifeline Assistance website.
If you believe that your income is at or less than 135% of the federal poverty guidelines then you can apply for Lifeline Assistance by showing proof of income such as pay stubs or tax returns.
Once you qualify for a free phone through Lifeline Assistance, you will have 90 days to choose a participating phone company. Check out some of the most popular Lifeline Assistance phone providers on the next slides.
